Holy Bazooka. We just realized last time we had an EP from Romeo was 2011 with ''Clean Slate''. Not just water under the bridge since then; he did grace us with new music from his other projects High Fauve and The Jane Fondas, plus provided some mighty fine remixes. But it's been 3 years since we heard him solo, bringing back his stripped down, yet emotional techno. With ''Des Moines EP'', he gracefully creates an intimate soundscape, a playground for the soul.
We have to admit : local illustrator and animated film director Alexandra Levasseur (
alexandralevasseur.com) beat us to the punch when she decided to use track ''ambient 1'' for her latest animated short ''Table d'Hôte''. The result is stunning : the tension in Romeo's sustained synth patch coupled with Alexandra's images build up to a dramatic punch, then soften by the piano outro. It resulted in a Vimeo Staff Pick, kudos les enfants! ''ambient 2'' is best described as minimal techno kissing lyricism on the mouth, while ''ambient 3'' is techno doing it - to lyricism - by behind.
voilà. enjoy.
